Jean-Andre Venel established the first orthopedic institute in 1780.  This hospital was the first of its kind and was dedicated to treating children with skeletal deformities.  Jean-Andre Venel is considered by many to be the founding father of orthopedics because he established the first hospital and published his methods that he used to treat children’s skeletal deformities.

Many of the developments that occurred in orthopedic surgery happened during times of war.  The methods of traction and splinting were developed during World War I and during World War II intramedullary rods were introduced to treat fractures of the femur and tibia.  This decreased the healing time of these breaks considerably.

Thanks to these and other advances, modern orthopedic surgery has become much less invasive and the implants that are used are much more durable than the crude devices that were utilized on the battle field to stabilize soldier’s injuries.
